New Zealand television drama series End Of The Valley marks the first screenwriting collaboration for Richard J Curtis and Lea Mclean, “Our aim is to deliver a fresh new paradigm of storytelling to engage complex narrative-savvy audiences and bring a renewed energy to Māori storytelling in television drama.” -Writer/Producer, Lea Mclean. 

Made with funding from Te Māngai Pāho and New Zealand on Air, the project began with story development support from Whakaata Māori, New Zealand’s indigenous broadcaster. “Having the continued support from Whakaata Māori from the get-go has been invaluable.” - Writer/Director, Richard Curtis. 

 

The series showcases an all-Māori cast, a mix of fresh faces with seasoned actors, Temuera Morrison (Boba Fett, Aquaman) and Miriama Smith (Ka Whawhai Tonu, Joan S2) as well as emerging talent from the Bay of Plenty, including Kataraina Howden-Borell (Kairakau, Ka Whawhai Tonu), Matia Mitai (Ka Whawhai Tonu, The Convert), and Tomika Whiu (Ka Whawhai Tonu, The Convert), all of whom deliver powerful performances with support from Acting Coach, Hori Ahipene.

 

End Of The Valley was a nominee in five categories at the 2025 New Zealand Screen Awards including Best Script - Drama Series and Best Director - Drama Series.
